Near Protocol Unveils New Blockchain Operating System for Web3

Near Protocol has just unveiled a new blockchain operating system, designed to improve user experience on Web3. The DApp’s common layer for browsing and discovering open web resources is a welcome addition to the Web3 space. Speaking at the Web3 and innovation festival ETHDenver 2023, the Near team explained that their system can work with any blockchain or Web2 backend. This means that users can enjoy a seamless experience, even when switching between applications or chains.

Developers can benefit from Near’s decentralized and composable frontends, which offer built-ins like payments, profiles, and notifications. Near co-founder Polosukhin has compared the system to the iOS of blockchain, as it provides developers with a platform to build and distribute their blockchain applications. This approach can offer significant cost savings for businesses, as Polosukhin explained:

“A lot of projects just migrated over to Near because they saw you can write in JavaScript smart contracts. That’s like three times cheaper to hire developers. This is just more usable not just for users, but for developers as well.”

Near is positioning itself as a competitor to Ethereum, offering a smart contract capability and proof-of-stake blockchain. The co-founder stated that they saw a growth in key metrics last year, including number of transactions, active monthly wallets, projects onboarded, developers, and money invested within the ecosystem. Polosukhin attributed this success to an effort to find existing applications with a user base, saying:

“They came to us, some of them because they saw you can write in JavaScript smart contracts. That’s like three times cheaper to hire developers. This is just more usable not just for users, but for developers as well.”
