Peacock had stopped allowing new users to sign up for the free tier

Peacock, the once free-spirited bird of the streaming world, has decided to fly the coop and embrace the finer things in life.NBCUniversal has ended its free, ad-supported version of its Peacock streaming service, previously promoted as “Free as a Bird.” New users can no longer sign up for the free tier and must subscribe to either the Premium plan ($4.99/month with ads) or the Premium Plus ($9.99/month without ads). This change is part of NBCU’s growth strategy and aims to focus on the paid plans, which offer a “unique” experience. Existing free users will continue to have access to Peacock for now, but with ads. Some Comcast Cable and Cox customers can still access Peacock Premium (with ads) for free, but that privilege will eventually be discontinued. The move comes after NBCU reported 20 million paid subscribers for Peacock as of 2022, up from 9 million the previous year. The platform had an adjusted loss of $2.5 billion in 2022 and is expected to reach a peak loss of $3 billion in 2023. The content offered on Peacock Premium will continue to grow, reaching nearly 100,000 hours of programming, including original series, licensed TV shows, movies, live sports, and news.
